Summer Drum Lessons

I am a student at BYU-Idaho studying music with an emphasis in jazz drumming, and this summer I am teaching drum lessons in Idaho Falls. Although I will be teaching students of all ages and levels of experience, I am most looking forward to teaching high school and middle school band students.

My credentials include:

- 4 years Idaho Falls High School Jazz Band Drummer
- Founder, composer, and leader of the IFHS Drumline, Synergy
- Idaho Falls Symphony Percussionist, 2003-2005
- All-State and All-North-West Percussionist
- BYU-Idaho’s top jazz band and top jazz combo drummer
- Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival 1st place Drum Soloist, 2009

In my lessons students will learn to be well-rounded musicians by:

- Learning all styles of drum set, primarily Jazz and Rock
- Learning basic chord theory—the best drummers are those who know their theory!
- Becoming familiar with other aspects of music such as Recording Technology, Career Opportunities, Drum Tuning and Maintenance, etc.

Lessons will also include:

- “The Drummer’s Library”- students are encouraged to arrive early to their lessons to study from a collection of over 50 DVD’s and books—instructional drum videos, Ken Burn’s Jazz Documentary, documentaries of percussionists, etc.
- Guest Teachers- will be brought in periodically so that students will experience multiple styles of teaching.
- Student Jazz Combo Recital- In August, students will have the opportunity to rehears and perform “jazz standards” with professional jazz musicians.

Lessons begin June 8th, but students can start whenever is most convenient for their schedules.

½ hr. lessons $10
1 hr. lesson $15
“Summer Plan”—weekly hour long lessons all summer (approximately 10 lessons) $100

Derek, I'm seriously considering taking lessons. I promise I'll be a good student; I really need a hobby. So why not learn one from a friend?
